DIGITAL DETOX TOOLKIT
WELCOME TO THE DIGITAL DETOX!
Digital Detox is an opportunity to temporarily stop all unnecessary* device usage. For the detox to be fully effective, we encourage deleting social media and other unnecessary apps from your phone. The detox may be done individually or with a group! We encourage schools to initiate community detoxes. Participants can follow along with the educational materials page to learn more about the five pillars of smart screen usage as they detox. The goal of this program is for teens to build healthy technological habits and to reflect upon changes to their physical and mental health. The typical length of the detox is two weeks, but we encourage you to continue beyond that for longer-lasting impacts on your screen habits.
*Unnecessary device usage is screen use that is not needed for your education and/or safety. For example, using social media and watching TV are unnecessary, while using a computer to write an essay for school or using a phone to call a parent is necessary.

Why should I participate in a Digital Detox?
A break from technology and social media can have great benefits to your social, mental, emotional, and physical wellbeing! Spending less time on devices will give you more free time to socialize, participate in extracurriculars and hobbies, do schoolwork, and spend time outside.
How do I participate?
It's easy! Read the instructions linked below, and begin the challenge. You can track your detox with the screen-time log (below), and explore the educational materials we have created.
How can I hold myself accountable for maintaining the detox?
Use the log and reflection questions to help stay on track. We suggest doing the detox in a group (even with just your closest friends/family members) so that you can encourage each other to keep going.
