In the summer after her first year of high school, Smart Screens 4 Teens founder Evelyn began the organization with hopes of warning her peers about the downsides of screen time. She recognized that as the world becomes increasingly digital, it is impossible to completely avoid technology - which is why it is so important to understand the potential risks and consequences. She started to generate materials that share suggestions for using devices in a safe and smart manner. She enlisted an international team of teenagers to work on research, outreach, and content development. Now in its second year, Smart Screens 4 Teens is continuing to create informational materials and share them with teens across the world.
Our mission is to help teens find a balance in their lives. The internet offers an abundance of information and opportunities. Devices are often necessary to complete schoolwork and stay in touch with friends and loved ones.
But the problem is that far too often, the screens are controlling us. Modern technology is able to manipulate users so that we waste valuable time unproductively scrolling. It leads to real consequences for our mental, physical, and social-emotional health.
We aim to share suggestions and strategies for combatting these risks, so that teens can make the most of their technology and stay in control.
Smart Screens 4 Teens creates curricula to inform teenagers about the risks of device usage, and how to avoid them. Many of these materials - including slideshows, reflection questions, and more - are available to the public on our website.
In addition, we have designed a Digital Detox program model, in which teens halt all unnecessary device usage for two or more weeks and reflect upon changes to their lifestyle and overall health. Teen leaders can organize these programs in their communities, but we also have instructions and materials online for students who would like to participate! Learn more about the program on the Digital Detox Toolkit page.
